Fine Lines and Wrinkles: What Non Surgical Facelift options are available

Facial cosmetic surgery treatments are always popular. While we all know beauty is more than skin deep, the appearance of our skin can make a huge difference to our confidence.

Some people are blessed with ‘good skin’ but the majority of us face the usual ageing issues such as fine lines and wrinkles.

These become more prominent over time as we continue to use the same facial muscles over and over again. For most people, the lines eventually become a permanent feature.

In this article, we explore whether there is a non surgical face lift alternative.

What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles can be a fold, ridge, crease or fine line that appears on your skin. It is a natural part of the ageing process; however, the formation of wrinkles may be accelerated due to aspects of your lifestyle.

  • Epidermis

As your skin and body ages, it takes its toll on your body’s ability to renew. For example, the epidermis (the top layer of your skin) will usually replace itself every two months. This is because cells flake and rub off and new ones form. As you get older, your body takes much longer to renew and your skin can take on an ageing appearance. There isn’t much you can do about this natural process, but general good health - keeping hydrated and eating a healthy diet – will help.

  • Collagen

The dermis is where collagen and elastane are kept, keeping your skin plumped up and youthful. Sadly, your body produces less and less collagen as you get older, so you lose the fat under the epidermis which causes sagging and wrinkles.

Facial fillers and Botox can be highly effective treatments to restore a fresher, plumper look to the skin.

  • Sun damage

Harmful UV rays can not only cause unsightly age spots, but they also break down the collagen in your skin which can cause wrinkles. Frequent sun exposure and burning can lead to damage to both your dermis and epidermis. It is important to wear sun protection that will stop the UVA rays from penetrating your skin. Remember, UVA rays can penetrate windows, so remember to wear your sunscreen even if you’re not going outside for long.

  • Facial expressions

Every time you move the muscles in your face, grooves and lines form which will then make their way to the surface. Be aware of when you’re squinting or frowning! Laughter lines (naso-labial folds) are those which form between the nose and the edges of the mouth – while these can be signs of a happy life they are not always welcome as a permanent feature of the face.

Non-surgical facial treatments

If your lines and wrinkles bother you, there are a variety of non-surgical anti-wrinkle treatments which you could consider.

Botox is perhaps the most well-known. These anti-wrinkle injections are good for treating crow’s feet wrinkles that appear at the corners of the eyes as well as frown lines on the forehead and vertical lines between the eyebrows.

Dermal fillers are another option, and are particularly effective in treating the naso-labial folds and the contour of the cheeks and chin which can lose volume over time.
