Full or Mini facelift? Your Guide on How to Decide.

There’s little you can do to stop your face from ageing.  Apart from the lucky few who are blessed with good genes, we all gradually succumb to signs of age - crow’s feet, laughter lines, jowls and a myriad of lines and wrinkles which deepen over time.  No-one likes to look older than they are, but if the changes to your face are getting you down, then a facelift procedure may be worth considering.

Facelifts and mini facelifts are among the most popular plastic surgery procedures carried out here at Manchester Plastic Surgery.  But what’s the difference between the two?  And how do you decide which is right for you?

What is a mini facelift?

A mini facelift is a great solution if you’re in a younger age bracket, generally 35 – 55 (though there are exceptions so if you are younger or older than this, there's no need to rule out this treatment!).

As the name suggests, a mini facelift is a less extensive treatment than a full facelift and is used to improve the appearance of the face, giving a younger look.  Sometimes the upper neck can be rejuvenated with a mini facelift, though this will depend on your physiology.

When we carry out a mini facelift, we make incisions in the front of the ear, tightening the underlying muscles and removing excess skin.  Stitches are usually hidden in the hairline.

What is a full facelift?

A full facelift is a more involved procedure which is ideal for people with more extensive signs of age.  This procedure will improve the jawline, cheek and the upper neck but it will also help to smooth the deep lines which appear at the side of the mouth and nose and the forehead.

When carrying out a full facelift we make incisions at the temples down to the front of the ear then behind the earlobe to the lower scalp.  We may also need to remove fat from around the neck and chin to improve the outline.

Helping you decide

When you attend your initial consultation to find out more about facelift surgery, we will help you decide whether a full or mini procedure is right for you.  We will assess your face, neck and the condition of your skin and seek to understand what results you would like to see.

Many people who are considering facelift surgery are worried that their treatment will be obvious to other people.  Not only do we minimise and hide scarring, we seek to provide natural results, so you are left looking a better version of yourself.  We don’t want people asking whether you’ve had surgery, we want them remarking on how well you look!
