3 Things to Consider Before a Tummy Tuck

With summer just around the corner, you may be looking forward to wearing lighter clothes and beachwear. Whilst everyone should feel body confident, regardless of shape or size, the reality is that most of us go through life with a level of insecurity about our appearance.

The stomach area is always a focus of attention at this time of year, particularly when you want to wear a swimsuit or bikini, shorts or a light summer dress. Wobbly tummies are part and parcel of life for most of us but if yours is getting you down – or worse, holding you back – then maybe it’s time to do something about it.

Diet and exercise have an important part to play, of course, but one of the benefits of tummy tuck surgery is that it gives you instant and permanent results. If it’s something you wish to consider then here are three key issues you should take into account before deciding to go ahead with surgery.

How severe is your problem?
When you attend your initial consultation, your surgeon will assess your anatomy and seek to understand the results you wish to achieve. This enables us to give you a good indication of whether your expectations are realistic. After all, we want you to go ahead with surgery only if it’s going to make you feel fantastic.

It’s important at this early stage to understand whether your results could be achieved through a full abdominoplasty, or whether a partial abdominoplasty will suffice.

The benefit of a partial abdominoplasty is that it involves less extensive surgery, so the recovery time is usually faster and there’s less scarring.

Are you aware of the risks?
We carry out dozens of tummy tuck procedures at the Spire Hospital Manchester each year, so you can rest assured you’re in the safe hands of an experienced surgeon. However, as with all plastic surgery, abdominoplasty carries risks. These include:

Infection around your wound – we will give you specific care instructions to ensure the risk of infection is minimised in the days and weeks after surgery. We’ll closely monitor your recovery, in the unlikely event you get an infection this can usually be treated with antibiotics.

Anaesthesia – there are risks with anaesthetic and it can make some people feel nauseous though it’s usually possible to reduce this with medication. We’ll discuss anaesthesia during your pre-operative assessment.

Blood clots – these are rare but they can occur. Our team will give you tailored advice but the key is to get moving as soon as you can after surgery.

Have you got time to recover?
The best way to recover quickly is to ensure you get a chance to relax and recuperate.

Make sure you go ahead with surgery when you don’t have too many calls on your time.

You should be prepared to take a break from work; get help with housework and everyday tasks like cooking so you’re not on your feet too long. If you have children, you need to make sure friends and family can help out so that you’re not run ragged looking after everyone else. For a change, it’s time to put you first!

Are you ready to take your first step?
If you want to look your best this summer and deal, once and for all, with a tummy you’re not happy with, book an initial consultation with a member of our surgical team. They will give you all the information you need to make an informed decision about whether an abdominoplasty in Manchester is right for you. If it helps, our 3D imaging technology can be used to visualise your results, helping you be sure you’re taking the right step.
