Breast enlargement surgery - how big should you go?

Breast enlargement is an exciting journey from the planning stage through to finally enjoying the finished results and your beautifully enhanced figure. However, breast enlargement surgery is a major undertaking and is a decision that should not be taken lightly.

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make during your consultation phase is what size breast enlargement that you want, in other words, how big do you want to go?

Key considerations

  • Your body type

To give the best results, your breast enlargement should naturally align with your body and your silhouette. Some body frames can carry bigger breasts, whereas a smaller person may look unnaturally and uncomfortably out of proportion.

  • Size, not cups

It is common for people to ask for breast enlargement regarding cup sizes, however, this is a very fluid measure. Cup sizes vary massively between manufacturers and a C cup in one lingerie store may be considered a B or a D cup in another shop. For complete clarity and to ensure your expectations are met, start thinking your enlargement regarding size and shape rather than a cup.

  • Try before you buy

We understand that surgery is a big commitment, so you need to be confident in your decision. The best way to do this is to try what we refer to as the “bag of rice” test.

This entails getting two freezer bags and filling them with a quantity of rice (uncooked) that is the same volume as the implants we have discussed during your initial consultation. You simply lie the bags on a tabletop and pat them flat before slipping the flat bags into your bra to give you a good idea of what you will look like with the increase in size you are considering.

If possible, perform the bag of rice test in a range of clothing. In some cases, bigger breasts under baggy clothes can make you feel bigger in general which may make people consider a smaller breast enlargement. It is wise to check your preferred size under tailored shirts, dresses, sportswear and the clothing you wear most often to make sure you are entirely happy.

  • Opt for 3D body imaging

3D body imaging will show you how your planned surgery will change your appearance. We provide this service at our state-of-the-art plastic surgery clinic in Manchester. What we do is scan your body and then create a realistic image of what difference your surgery will make. This can be extremely helpful when trying to determine the size of your breast implants in particular.

The future

Breast enlargement should be to enhance your natural beauty, not detract from it. Consider whether the size you want works in proportion with your body. You also need to think about the future, will you still want the same size in 20 years’ time and will the size lead to sagging? Here are some key questions to answer before you take the plunge;

  • Do I want a natural look?
  • Will my new size work with my lifestyle (e.g. any sports activities you take part in)
  • Will I need a new wardrobe or can I still fit in the same clothes?
  • What will happen to my breasts as I age?
  • Will I need a breast lift later on?
  • Will I have bad posture and back pain?

It is important to bear in mind that breast enlargement is a long-term commitment. While you can have your breast implants removed in the future, you should plan for your breasts to be a lifelong decision.
