Can Rhinoplasty Make Your Nose Smaller?

When you feel self-conscious about an area of your body, it can seriously impact your confidence and quality of life. Unfortunately, this insecurity is amplified when the body part you feel self-conscious about is in the centre of your face. Whether you are concerned with the width, size, or angle of your nose, or you have experienced an injury to the area, a rhinoplasty (or ‘nose job’) surgery could give you the results you desire.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery treatments carried out in the UK, and the nature of the surgery will usually depend on the results you are looking to achieve. During the surgery, small incisions are made inside the nostrils and at the base of the nose to allow your surgeon access to the cartilage and bone so that it can be sculpted into shape to achieve your desired result.

Following your treatment, a splint will be applied to your nose to ensure that it maintains its new shape. Depending on the nature of your surgery, nasal packs may be placed inside your nostrils to stabilise your septum.

Ensuring You Get the Right Results

Normally, rhinoplasties are carried out from within the nose, although an ‘open’ procedure may be appropriate in more complex cases. This will be determined at your consultation with Mr James Murphy, one of the UK’s leading plastic surgeons and our rhinoplasty specialist at Manchester Plastic Surgery.

Your consultation will last between 45 minutes to an hour. In this time, you can discuss with Mr Murphy everything you don’t like about your nose; whether you want rhinoplasty surgery to make your nose smaller or you hate your side profile, we will seek to understand your concerns and plan your treatment accordingly.

To ensure you and Mr Murphy have the same image for your new nose, we use 3D imaging software. This software takes photographs of your face and utilises technology to mock-up a picture of how your nose will look following your treatment. You can discuss this image with Mr Murphy and work together to refine any aspects of it to ensure the results you desire are achievable.

What Results Can Be Achieved Through Rhinoplasty?

At your consultation with Mr Murphy, he will advise you on realistic expectations for your results, and which issues can be addressed. One of the most common concerns for our patients is making their nose smaller. Having a big nose or high bridge can affect people’s side profiles and cause problems for their self-esteem. To help you gain confidence in your side profile and make your nose smaller, we simply remove and sculpt the cartilage on the bridge of your nose, bringing your nasal bones together. This will give you the appearance of a slimmer and smaller nose.

If your main concern with is a hump or hook, then a chisel or rasp will be used to remove cartilage from your bridge, making it straighter and narrower, depending on what you agreed pre-op.

If you are worried about a bulbous tip or the angle between your nose and your upper lip, cartilage can also be trimmed at the tip of your nose to reshape or resize it. Alternatively, if you’re looking to narrow flared nostrils, we can make incisions around the nostrils and remove some skin from the base of your nose, until we achieve a smaller but still natural result.
