When we think of the signs of ageing, it is usually frown lines and wrinkles on the face that first come to mind.
However, one of the most noticeable signs of age is the condition of the skin around the neck. The neckline has relatively thin skin, which starts to lose its elasticity as we get older, causing the skin around the neck and jawline to begin to slacken. When this happens, jowls and double chins can appear and this can have a negative effect on self-confidence.
If you have concerns about the appearance of your neck, then you might wonder what treatments are available. One of the most common questions we get asked is: is it possible to have a non surgical neck lift?
Non-surgical neck lift
We do not offer a non surgical neck lift as we do not recommend it as an option for good, long-lasting results. Typically, a non surgical neck lift involves jawline fillers which temporarily plump out the skin to make it appear more youthful.
The problem is that fillers have only minimal impact and do not offer the long-lasting results of a neck lift. The delicate nature of the skin around the neck and the lack of collagen means it is hard to produce the skin tightening results of a neck lift without surgery.
For the best, long-lasting and most effective results, a surgical neck lift, also known as platysmaplasty, is an ideal option. There are two approaches to consider.
If your neckline is only just beginning to show signs of age, surgical treatment to improve the neck region can perhaps involve nothing more than liposuction which enables us to remove the excess fat deposits. Neck liposuction involves the insertion of a hollow tube into the neck through which fatty deposits are withdrawn.
If more extensive treatment is required, however, then a platysmaplasty will involve the removal of skin and fat from your neck and the tightening and restructuring of the underlying muscles.
The end results of a surgical neck lift we are aiming for are tighter, smoother skin that reveals a more youthful appearance. The right approach will depend on your physiology and the extent of the results you wish to achieve. You will also need to weigh up the benefits versus the risks of surgery. All surgery carries some element of risk – with neck surgery the risks include infections and blood clots. We will discuss these issues in detail with you, and we we will be able to make an accurate assessment, when you attend your initial appointment.
Fortunately, both approaches leave you with minimal, barely visible scarring as they involve only small incisions behind the ears and under the chin.
