There’s no getting away from it, fine lines and wrinkles are all part of the ageing process. While non-surgical treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers can help you maintain a fresh appearance, we wanted to find out what else can you do to try to keep your skin looking good?
The problem areas
Some people get lucky with ‘good skin’ which remains taught well into middle age while the rest of us start to see changes in our mid-30s onwards. Crow’s feet (the lines which stem from the outer corners of your eyes), a furrowed brow and horizontal lines across the forehead are common areas of complaint, as are the nasolabial folds (the lines which appear between your nose and the edges of your mouth).
What causes fine lines and wrinkles?
Sun exposure is thought to be the biggest cause of fine lines and wrinkles but they’re also hereditary. Age is a major factor – your skin begins to lose collagen and elasticity and fat beneath your skin starts to reduce. Put together, these factors can leave you looking older than you are (and older than you feel!)
Can you prevent lines and wrinkles?
All in all, there isn’t much you can do to prevent fine lines and wrinkles – some people are simply luckier than others in that their skin ages more gracefully!
The main thing you can do to protect your skin, especially your face, is to avoid sun exposure – don’t sun bathe and do get into the habit of wearing sun protection on your face every day throughout the year, not just in summer.
While you may wish to be sceptical about the anti-ageing claims made by the beauty industry, it’s worth looking after your skin by cleansing morning and night. Dermatologists recommend that you get into the habit of removing all traces of make-up when you go to bed to give your skin a chance to repair itself while you sleep.
Addressing fine lines and wrinkles with dermal fillers
While there’s little you can do to prevent the onset of fine lines and wrinkles, you can take action to improve the appearance of your skin.
Non-surgical treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers can be highly effective in helping to plump out the skin so that lines and wrinkles are less visible.
While you’ll need ongoing treatments to maintain a fresher appearance, the effects can be long-lasting. When you attend your initial consultation with our anti-wrinkle specialist plastic surgeon Christopher Jones, we will be able to talk you through what’s involved and give you a good assessment of the results that you’re likely to see.
