Rhinoplasty for breathing issues

Written by Manchester Plastic Surgery | 15-Jun-2022 09:30:00

Whilst many people opt for nose surgery for aesthetic reasons, for others, there are medical benefits too. Whilst issues can be caused by allergies or nasal polyps, often breathing is inhibited due to the size or shape of the septum, the part that divides your nostrils.

Nose surgery, when carried out by an experienced surgeon, can help. Rhinoplasty is one of our most popular treatments and our lead surgeon in this field, Mr James Murphy, has helped over 2000 people.

So, whatever your motivations for nose surgery, whether it’s for aesthetic or medical reasons, or a mixture of both, book an initial consultation to discuss the problem you have. Mr Murphy will be able to assess your physiology, consider the best approach and give you a clear idea of the difference that surgery can make.

Can a nose job help with breathing problems?

The short answer is: yes! A crooked or uneven septum can cause a narrowing of the nostrils making it difficult for air to flow. Most of us have some irregularity in the septum without an issue but when the problem is more severe it can leave you with laboured breathing even when at rest. The problem is then compounded during exercise when you need to be able to breathe more deeply. In some instances, this can cause anxiety and even headaches.

Rhinoplasty can be a good way to address breathing difficulties as your surgeon will be able to pinpoint the reason for your irregular airflow and perform surgery to correct the problem. The treatment is relatively straight-forward involving a general anaesthetic and an overnight stay at our state-of-the-art hospital in Manchester where you’ll be cared for by our specialist team.

What’s involved in rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a catch-all term for nose surgery. We perform rhinoplasty surgery for people who are unhappy with the size and/or shape of the nose, removing humps or correcting flared nostrils among other issues.

With breathing difficulties, the most common treatment is septoplasty to ensure correct airflow along the nasal passages.

You may not feel the benefits immediately as the swelling can take several weeks to subside but our team will be on hand to support your recovery and ensure you feel the benefits as quickly as possible.

Deciding if nose surgery is right for you?

The best way to decide if nose surgery is right for you is to attend an initial consultation with Mr Murphy. At this meeting, you will be able to ask questions about any aspect of the surgery and find out more about what’s involved in preparing for and recovering from surgery. We understand it’s a big decision so you can rest assured that our team will be here for you every step of the way.
