How to Get Rid of Saggy Skin After Pregnancy

While some women seem to pop back to their original shape after pregnancy with relative ease, most people are less fortunate. In the first few weeks and months after childbirth your appearance is perhaps the last thing on your mind as you adjust to life as a parent, though eventually it’s understandable that you’ll want to get your body back to something like its pre-pregnancy shape.

Saggy skin around the tummy area is a frequent problem.  Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do to prevent it, though it’s a good idea to use moisturiser on your bump during pregnancy to keep the skin nice and supple.  Many women find that the stretched skin can remain stubbornly loose regardless of a good diet and exercise routine after the birth.

If you would like to get rid of saggy skin after pregnancy once and for all, then plastic surgery may be a good option to consider.  We often carry out surgery to remove saggy skin as part of a mummy makeover package, also known as the ‘mommy makeover’ as the idea hailed from America.

The aim of a mummy makeover package is to tackle the areas of the body most affected by pregnancy – the tummy and the breasts.  It involves an abdominoplasty to remove saggy skin and re-shape the waist, and breast enlargement surgery to increase size and restore lost volume.  In some instances, a breast uplift is carried out instead of, or alongside, the breast enlargement treatment, to improve shape.

  • Abdominoplasty explained

An abdominoplasty is perhaps better known as a tummy tuck.  You can opt for a full or partial abdominoplasty; the right approach will depend on the extent of the change you wish to see.

In a full tummy tuck, we will tighten the abdominal wall to firm and flatten the tummy and narrow the waistline.  In a partial abdominoplasty, we will improve the appearance of the lower abdomen, making smaller incisions.

  • Breast enlargement explained

Breast enlargement, also known as breast augmentation, involves the insertion of silicone or salt-water implants to increase size and volume.  The right size will depend on your anatomy and the results you would like to achieve, though an increase of one or two cup sizes usually gives the most natural look.

  • Breast uplift explained

Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, helps to address any sagging which can occur as a result of pregnancy and breast-feeding.  It involves incisions around the nipple, extending to the groove beneath, and then the removal of excess skin.  Usually the nipple has to be moved, though women with relatively small breasts may be suitable for a modified procedure.

It’s important that we understand the results you would like to achieve so that we can help you decide if a mummy makeover plastic surgery package is the right step for you to take.

Surgery isn’t right for everyone so it’s important to have all the information about what’s involved, the risks, and the recovery process, before you go ahead.

You can find lots of information on our mummy makeover pages, though a face-to-face meeting is always most helpful.  At the initial consultation, we can assess your body and give you a good idea of the results that could be achieved, and we can provide more detailed information about what’s involved.
