Introducing Our New Surgeon - Mr Benjamin Baker

Benjamin Baker BMedSci, BMBS, MRCS, PGCert(MedEd), MBA, FRCS(Plast) is a specialist in breast surgery and body contouring.

Mr Baker studied at the University of Nottingham and trained in plastic surgery at hospitals in Lancashire and Manchester.

He completed a prestigious fellowship in oncoplastic breast surgery in Newcastle and an advanced international fellowship in reconstructive oncology, microsurgery and aesthetic surgery in Melbourne, Australia, a world-renowned centre for microsurgical practice and tissue transplant.

He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2015 and attained his Fellowship in 2021.

Mr Baker’s aesthetic surgery training was with Manchester Plastic Surgery founder Mr James Murphy, and he has also spent time learning from other national and international experts in the field.

Mr Baker is one of only a handful of plastic surgeons who are dual qualified in the full scope of both reconstructive breast surgery and breast cancer surgery, and he currently runs a busy NHS practice with a focus on reconstruction for breast cancer patients.

He has extensive experience in reconstructive surgery, including microsurgery, covering breast, sarcoma, limb trauma, skin cancer and head and neck malignancy.  Tissue transplant is an area of particular interest in his NHS practice, utilising tissues from the abdomen and thighs in breast reconstruction to create natural results that last and improvements in body contour.

Mr Baker has won a number of undergraduate and postgraduate academic prizes, has published books and peer reviewed papers and is an invited reviewer for the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery (JPRAS).

A BAPRAS Education Committee Member and mentor, he has recently been involved in research into with breast cancer who have had a previous breast augmentation with implants, patient reported outcomes, and improvements in training in microvascular surgery.

He said: “Breast reconstruction is a particularly interesting field because there is no singular right way to approach it, we adapt our approach to the preferences and needs of the individual patient and make joint decisions with them.

"We know that breast reconstruction has significant impact on quality of life and psychological well-being, and it is important that we make the right decisions together to achieve high quality aesthetic results that will last the test of time.

"I do everything that I can to make sure patients recover quickly following surgery and feel good about the way they look.”

In his spare time, Mr Baker enjoys spending time with his young family, skiing, and football, and is accomplished at the piano and cello.
