Rhinoplasty - What Worries Patients Most?

Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular treatments we carry out at Manchester Plastic Surgery. Every year we support hundreds of people to live with greater self-confidence as a result of correcting issues with the size and shape of their nose and nostrils. As you can imagine, it’s a very satisfying process.

Whilst most patients come to us for rhinoplasty if their noses have been altered through injury, in most cases our patients were born with a nose they do not like. This means they’ve gone through many years of feeling self-conscious about their appearance.

Of course, unlike other areas of the body, the size and shape of your nose cannot be masked with clothing or make-up; it is simply something you have to live with. Not surprisingly, many people’s confidence and self-esteem are sorely affected.

Rhinoplasty is the solution. It involves having a general anaesthetic and around two hours in theatre. Most operations are carried out from within the nose - incisions are made inside the nostrils or at the base of the nose, providing access to the cartilage and bone, which can then be sculpted into shape. The treatment varies if we are to remove a hump or reduce flared nostrils.

When you attend your initial consultation we’ll talk you through the approach in detail. The more good quality information you have, the better. Not only does this help you make an informed decision about whether surgery is right for you, but it also helps to alleviate fears or concerns you may have about the operation or the anaesthetic.

Even though you may be highly motivated to have nose surgery, you may also be apprehensive. It’s understandable. Rhinoplasty is major surgery, so it needs careful thought and planning.

  • You need to know your surgeon understands the results you want to achieve so that your dissatisfaction with your nose can be solved once and for all.
  • You need to know you’re in the hands of an experienced and expert team who carry out rhinoplasty regularly, so are familiar with the latest techniques.
  • You need to know you’ll get the pre-surgery support you need; and quality aftercare whilst you’re in hospital and when you’ve returned home.

When you begin your journey with us by attending an initial consultation with our lead rhinoplasty surgeon Mr James Murphy, you’ll see our service is designed to put you at your ease.

Mr Murphy will assess your nose and the physiology of your face and seek to understand the results you’d like to achieve. Drawing on his 25+ years of experience, Mr Murphy will give you a clear indication of whether your results are achievable and, if so, what’s involved.

We find that the more you can understand about your surgery the better equipped you are to decide whether surgery is right for you.
