Tips for choosing a rhinoplasty surgeon

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common procedures we carry out here at Manchester Plastic Surgery. Over the years we have established a strong reputation for nose re-shaping and it’s a particular specialism of Medical Director James Murphy.

Mr Murphy and his team work with patients who have disliked their nose all their lives, or those whose nose has become misshapen because of injury. Because the nose is such a prominent feature of the face and makes such a difference to self-esteem, he describes rhinoplasty as highly rewarding.

“Many patients feel very self-conscious about their nose. By the time they come to us they have often been thinking about having rhinoplasty for quite some time,” says Mr Murphy.

If you are considering rhinoplasty, then take a look at our nose surgery section. Here we help you decide if surgery is right for you and we outline the risks; what’s involved in planning your surgery and after-care. You can also see our results gallery to view before and after pictures of real-life rhinoplasty patients.

The next step is to book an initial consultation with Mr Murphy. At this meeting, Mr Murphy will assess the shape of your nose and seek to understand the results you’d like to achieve. He will be able to talk in more detail about what’s involved in a rhinoplasty procedure, and answer any questions you may have. The aim of the consultation is to enable Mr Murphy to determine whether surgery will give you the results you’re after, and to help you make an informed decision about whether rhinoplasty is right for you.

When considering rhinoplasty, we would advise that you:

Work only with an experienced surgeon, like Mr Murphy, who has carried out many rhinoplasty procedures over a number of years and who keeps up-to-date with the latest research and techniques.

Make sure you feel a good rapport. When choosing your plastic surgeon, it’s important that you get the chance to meet them before committing to surgery, and that they ask you almost as many questions as you ask them in order to fully understand your motivations for surgery and your expectations of the end results. It’s only through a strong, mutual understanding that a successful outcome can be achieved.

Assess the risks. All plastic surgery comes with risk so you need to be fully aware of what’s involved so that you can make an informed decision about whether rhinoplasty is right for you. While scarring is non-existent or minimal with rhinoplasty, the nose area is usually swollen for a few days. In a few instances it may be necessary to conduct a second operation to correct a small defect which is only apparent when the swelling has settled.
