Getting in shape – and staying that way – is never easy. If you’ve lost weight or had a baby, you may find you have excess skin, particularly around the hips and tummy.
Unfortunately, it’s not usually possible to reduce the problem through exercise or further weight loss, and you may feel less than 100% happy with your appearance.
Post partum tummy tuck
Having gone to the effort of losing weight, it’s a terrible shame to be unable to wear the clothes you would like, or to feel good in your underwear or swimwear, so you may wish to consider plastic surgery solutions for removing excess skin.
The right treatment will, of course, depend on the area of the body which is affected, and the extent of the problem, but for the stomach, waist and hip area, an abdominoplasty procedure (tummy tuck surgery) is usually the best option.
Tummy tuck surgery
A tummy tuck procedure, also known as abdominoplasty, involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and a tightening of the abdomen wall, leaving you with a flatter stomach and narrower waist. You can opt for a full abdominoplasty or a partial abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck) which is a less extensive but still highly effective procedure.
A full tummy tuck involves lifting a large skin flap to enable us to reposition the abdominal muscles. When the flap is replaced we are able to remove excess skin.
During a partial abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck) the incisions are shorter and your navel may not be removed, though we will still lift a flap of skin in order to access the abdominal muscles. Again, when the flap is replaced we are able to remove any excess skin to create a smoother outline.

Important considerations
If you are considering plastic surgery to remove excess skin, please bear in mind:
- We can help you achieve a much more pleasing outline for the long-term. If you gain weight in future, it’s likely that the weight will be distributed across your body, not isolated to one single area, so you can enjoy long-lasting results.
- A full or partial abdominoplasty will involve major surgery. It’s important that you understand what’s involved and the risks before you decide to go ahead. Take a look at our information pages on liposuction and abdominoplasty and then arrange an initial consultation so we can talk things through face-to-face.
- You may require more than one procedure. It may not be possible to remove excess skin at the same time as abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, so you may have to have two operations. The right approach will depend upon how many areas you want us to address and the extent of the procedure which you require.
