Types of facelift UK

When starting to think about having surgery to rejuvenate tired or saggy skin, many people are under the mistaken belief that there is only one type of facelift available. We offer three different types of facelift here at Manchester Plastic Surgery - the right approach will depend on your anatomy, the condition of your skin and the results you’d like to achieve.

The ‘mini’ facelift

A mini facelift is a type of facelift which provides a shorter recovery period than a standard facelift and leaves patients with less swelling and bruising post-surgery. Because of the fact that the surgery isn’t as intrusive as other types of facelift – with only two small incisions in front of the ears carried out - the mini facelift can be done under local anaesthetic. This consequently reduces the likelihood of the need for an overnight stay. Mini facelifts are more limited than the traditional facelift and generally only focus on improving on the jawline, cheeks, and to some extent, the upper neck area.

The face and neck lift

As the name suggests, the face and neck lift is a type of facelift which concentrates on the lower section of the face – incisions are made slightly further behind the ear than is the case in a mini facelift. Furthermore, a face and neck lift allows for further corrections to be made in the space between the chin and the jawline. A lift such as this one is most often accompanied by liposuction and can include fat removal. The neck is an area of the body that patients have less confidence in and is usually an area that is regularly targeted to achieve a more youthful, sculpted look.

The full facelift

Finally, a full or extended facelift involves the same process as the previous two types of facelift but extends into the temporal region. This allows for the removal of crow’s feet, cheek alterations and lifting of the lateral brow. Such a surgery is much more intensive but is an attractive option for the more aged customer – wrinkles and deep lines can be smoothed out, and loose skin that gathers around the neck can be removed.

Such surgery is, of course, more invasive than a mini-lift and will involve a much longer recovery time, as well as an overnight stay in hospital. However, the entire process ensures that the whole face achieves a more youthful look.

Other options for a more youthful appearance

If you’re considering types of facelift surgery to address lines in your skin, then you may also wish to consider non-surgical plastic surgery options such as dermal fillers.  The effectiveness of these treatments depends on how deep your lines are, so we always recommend starting sooner rather than later.
