Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery - Your Options

Lots of people come to us to find out about treatments to keep the eyes looking youthful.  In this article we explore upper eyelid surgery treatments for under-eye bags and loose eyelid skin.

Getting older is one of the natural processes of life and, try as we might, we haven’t yet worked out how to stop ourselves from ageing.

As the skin around our eyes is particularly delicate, signs of ageing can be more pronounced. However, eyelid surgery, such as upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can improve the overall appearance of the face through making the eyes look younger.

While the standard go-to solution for under eye bags may well be the cosmetics aisle in a pharmacy, there are other options for those feeling particularly conscious about their eyes such as upper eyelid surgery. Making the difficult decision to alleviate these eye bags may come at a higher cost than an eye cream with questionable results, but also may be the difference between your self-confidence suffering and ensuring that you still feel in the prime of life.

Unfortunately, eye bags can affect people irrespective of their age – people in their 20s and 30s should not be disheartened to find that they suffer from such bags, nor should they feel uncomfortable seeking treatment as a means of fixing them. Upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery is suitable for all ages and maybe the ideal treatment to ensure you maintain a youthful appearance, without tired looking eye bags giving you away.

Why does eyelid skin loosen?

As skin ages, it gradually loses the elasticity that keeps it pert and tight. This slow loss of elasticity and the unavoidable laws of gravity means that excess skin gathers and consequently settles on the upper and lower eyelids. Upper eyelid skin doing so can cause issues – the extra fold of skin can hang over the eyelashes meaning you may wish this to be corrected with upper and lower eyelid surgery.

What treatments are available?

Upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a treatment that removes excess skin, muscle and even fat from the upper and lower eyelids, with the intention of improving an alert appearance, reducing eye bags and eliminating droopy eyelids. Upper and lower eyelid surgeries can be a sure-fire way of rebuilding that lost confidence and enhance your appearance. However, it is important to be realistic with your results; our experienced plastic surgeons will be able to give you an accurate idea of post-surgery results.

How does upper eyelid and lower eyelid surgery work?

In eyelid surgery, if both the upper and lower eyelids are performed together, can last around two hours, using local anaesthetic with either oral or IV sedation, depending on where you choose to have the procedure carried out. Your surgeon will carefully cut along the natural lines of your eyelids, separating skin from its underlying tissue, in order to remove excess fat and skin. These incisions will be closed with tiny stitches which stay in for 3 – 6 days.

Lower eyelid surgery often doesn’t require stitches – an incision is made inside your lower eyelid to remove fat and any fine lines on the eyelid area are softened. Because the natural crease of the eyelid is used, surgeons ensure that no visible scars are left.

The surgery may seem daunting, however through consultations with our plastic surgery team in Manchester, you will be able to find out more about whether it’s the right step for you.
