What is the best alternative to a facelift?

For most of us, there’s no escape from the signs of age. Some people are happy to embrace the signs of getting older, like grey hairs and fine lines, whilst others prefer to maintain the bloom of youth for as long as possible!

For many of us, the most prominent signs will appear in the form of deep links and wrinkles in the face, or a loss of muscle tone around the jawline which can cause ‘jowls’ to develop. These signs can cause self-consciousness or insecurity, as the face we see in the mirror no longer reflects how young we feel inside.

While there’s no way to reverse the clock, there are a variety of exceptional facial rejuvenation treatments you can consider, which will help to minimise the signs of ageing and restore a more youthful plumpness to the face to enhance your confidence.

At Manchester Plastic Surgery, we offer three different types of facelift surgery for patients concerned with the signs of ageing: a mini facelift, a face and neck lift, and an extended facelift. Which of the three you choose to opt for depends on the extent of your concerns and the results you wish to achieve.

However, for some patients, alternative treatments may be possible - which may be able to bring you the results you’ve always dreamed of.

Non-surgical facelift alternatives

The two non-surgical treatments that we offer here at MPS as facelift alternatives are anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. Both treatments are minimally invasive and require very little recovery time, offering results that are visible almost immediately. They involve the careful administration of injections into targeted areas on the face to reduce the appearance of fine lines and loss of fullness, giving the face a refreshed appearance.

At your consultation, Mr Christopher Jones, our expert in all types of surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation, will talk you through both options in more detail and give you a clearer picture about which treatment (or combination of treatments) will give you the best results.

Dermal fillers

Depending on the areas of concern and your desired results, you may find that dermal fillers can give you great results. Typically, we recommend dermal fillers to patients who are concerned with moderate to severe wrinkles and fine lines. They usually take around 30-40 minutes to administer and the effects are visible immediately, though they will look their best after 48-72 hours, once any bruising or minor swelling has subsided.

Dermal fillers are commonly used to contour the cheeks and chin and to replace the loss of volume in the face. We also use dermal fillers to treat deep lines that extend between the mouth and nose (known as naso-labial folds) and vertical lines around the mouth.

When considering facelift alternatives, such as dermal fillers, it is important to be aware that unlike a facelift, the results of non-surgical treatments will not be permanent. Over time, the body will break down and absorb the dermal filler, so further treatments may be required after the initial appointment to maintain the desired effect. If you choose not to return for repeat treatments, then any treatment areas will slowly return to their previous appearance, though please note that they will appear no worse than before the treatment.

Anti-wrinkle injections

In contrast to dermal fillers, we typically use anti-wrinkle injections to treat what are termed ‘crow’s feet’ wrinkles around the eyes, horizontal lines on the forehead, and vertical lines between the eyebrows. Anti-wrinkle injections can take as little as 20 minutes to administer, depending on the severity of the targeted areas – making them a great option for both men and women of all ages.

Anti-wrinkle injections are another great alternative to a facelift, with no down-time for recovery, no surgery, and no scarring. However, as with dermal fillers, the results will start to fade after three to four months, but with repeated treatments, the relaxed and softened effects will last for longer.

Next steps

Ultimately, here at MPS we believe that life is about being happy. So, if fine lines and wrinkles are getting you down, a range of facial rejuvenation treatments (both surgical and non-surgical) are available to you to help restore your youthful glow. While both anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are great options to help you restore a more youthful glow, if you are seeking more permanent results, you may wish to consider having a facelift.
