What is the difference between a neck tuck and a neck lift?

If your neck and jowls have started to sag then you may be considering having neck-related plastic surgery. In your research, it’s likely you’ll come across two procedures, a neck tuck and a neck lift, and wondering what the difference is. New terminology can be difficult which is why our surgical team will always explain what you need to know in plain English!

Here at Manchester Plastic Surgery, we offer neck lift treatments, we don’t use the term ‘neck tuck’. However, there are two options for a neck lift. One is the straight-forward removal of fat using liposuction (this is what people usually mean if they use the term ‘neck tuck’).

However, the alternative approach involves not only liposuction but the lifting of the skin around the jawline and neck too. The right approach will depend on the extent of the problem you’d like to solve.

Usually, it’s possible to achieve good results in the neck area through fat removal alone. This is an appropriate approach if the problem is caused by excess deposits of fat in the neck and involves the insertion of a hollow tube, called a cannula, into the neck through which fatty deposits are withdrawn.

If the skin around your neck and jawline needs to be lifted we will perform a more extensive treatment to remove the skin and fat from your neck and tighten and restructure the underlying muscles.

Both approaches involve extremely small incisions behind the ears and under the chin. Your scars will be permanent, though they will fade with time, and we’ll do our very best to ensure they are minimised.

Neck lift surgery can be performed as a stand-alone treatment or as part of a facelift, brow lift or eyelid surgery – we can discuss the options with you at your initial consultation. It generally takes two to three hours and can often be performed under local anaesthetic, though a general anaesthetic is always an option if you prefer. Usually, we’ll ask you to stay overnight at our state-of-the-art hospital so we can support you in the initial aftermath of surgery and you’ll continue to receive support from our team when you return home and for the duration of your recovery.
