What questions should I ask my surgeon about breast implant removal?

Having your breast implants removed is a big decision -  so you must be confident you’re making the right decision.  Another key aspect is choosing a surgeon you can trust to carry out the treatment correctly and give you the best results. One way to gain confidence in your decision is by asking the right questions in your initial consultation, so you can make an informed choice that’s right for you.

Questions about the surgeon’s qualifications and experience

If you’re deciding between surgeons, you should find out how experienced they are and if they’re confident in performing this procedure. Some great questions to ask include:

  • Are you on the specialist register for plastic surgery?
  • What specific training do you have in breast implant revision techniques?
  • How many breast implant removal surgeries do you perform a month?
  • Have you been involved in any medical malpractice suits?

At Manchester Plastic Surgery, Mr James Murphy, our expert in breast surgery, has extensive training and is one of the country’s leading cosmetic surgeons. He is a full member of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the United Kingdom Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (UKAAPS), so you can be sure you’re in safe hands if you choose to have your treatment with him.

Questions about the surgeon’s past work

Having a look at the before-and-after results of any surgeon’s work is a great indicator of their experience and the kind of results you can expect following your treatment. When you’re looking at their past work, it’s also a great idea to research their reviews so that you can get a feel of the surgeon and their patient satisfaction. Some questions we suggest you ask in your consultation are:

  • Can I see some before-and-after photos?
  • Can I speak with some of your past breast implant removal patients?
  • How many revisions of your own work do you perform on average?

Questions about your procedure and the results

Above everything, your priority when choosing a surgeon should be your safety and confidence that the surgeon can give you the results you are looking for. Before deciding on your surgeon, make sure you ask the following questions:

  • What can I expect my results to look like?
  • What will be involved in my procedure?
  • What are my options if I am dissatisfied with my outcome?
  • Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
  • What will be expected of me before and after surgery to see the best results?
  • What surgical technique is recommended for me?
  • What are the risks and complications associated with my treatment and how are they handled?
  • Will my results change over time?

As with any surgery, knowing what to expect and the associated risks is extremely important, as you’re making a big decision which shouldn’t be taken lightly. At Manchester Plastic Surgery, our expert surgeons are dedicated to giving our patients honest and realistic expectations for the treatment, recovery, risks, and results, so you can feel confident you’re on the same page and you’re in the right hands.
